Cyrus/Chris meta

So, now that the chapter is done with, I've been planning and promising to post some meta on Cyrus and Chris, and now I've finally got the time and the energy for that, so hooray!

Cyrus. Figuring him out has long been a difficult task for me, at least when it comes to romance. Around the time when he was a teenager, I got ACR and randomized the hood. Supposedly, Cyrus liked both boys and girls, and I was quite curious to see who he might pick. He, however, didn't seem to show much interest in doing so. Well, I thought, there's plenty of time, and in college he'll have more options available. But I was surprised again.

In college, I'd invite sims over, throw parties and all that good old college stuff. But when left on his own and not poked, Cyrus, well he generally cleans. He might well start collecting dirty plates or taking the trash out in the middle of a roof raising party. Or, in the Greek House, his favorite alternatives are playing the pinball machine or the guitar.

For a sim with eight outgoing points, he doesn't interact all that much on his own. I don't know why that would be, possibly his neatness gets in the way, along with the fun distractions in the house. Or I've also been suspecting that his vampirism might have an effect, as he almost doesn't have needs. Naturally, I've been poking him a little, and making him socialize some and meet new sims. He'd get along fine with them, but none of them seemed to interest him romantically. He might occasionally have a lightning bolt with someone (one bolt, not two or three), but his ACR token stayed quiet. I would have suspected that he might not have one at all, but the adjuster listed its stats just fine.

The Bookacies had been living in the Greek House for a while when Chris happened to wander on the lot. I've often greeted anyone who I notice to be on the lot, just for the fun of it. And for influencing to write term papers, for more friends and for potential love interests. So that's how Chris ended up inside, too. That evening I noticed that she and Cyrus had two bolts. She was the first sim I'd seen him have two bolts with, and he was probably closer to half way through college at that point.

Naturally, I got excited. Two bolts! There might be something in here! I've seen a lot of sims react to a single bolt with ACR. Many of my teens have gone "oooh, a lightning bolt, first kiss now please!". Not Cyrus. I expected him to possibly need more bolts to get interested. So as Chris popped on the lot and I noticed the potential, I poked Cyrus in her direction and had him interact with her.

Again, they got along just fine, made friends even. But even with their two natural bolts, things stayed strictly friendly. Perhaps the comparison of Cyrus with his siblings and first cousins is somewhat unfair, but it was quite intriguing that while the rest of the gang might easily flirt with random folks who wondered on the lot and hit the hot tub with someone they have 30 points daily, Cyrus remained strictly friendly with his best buddy, with whom he had two bolts. At that point, I was seriously doubting that Cyrus' ACR token was a lie. But then, something happened.

It was really Chris who made the first move. One evening she just flirted with him, and he gladly accepted. (Those shots actually made it into a chapter, too.) If I remember correctly, that was actually a base game flirt. Chris didn't seem to be the most flirty of sims, either, so things went on like that for a while: Chris would occasionally flirt, Cyrus would respond positively, and then they'd be friendly again. So the impression I got was pretty much: Chris: *flirts*, Cyrus: "Oooh, flirting... Wanna play red hands?"

So that's what eventually led to me writing Cyrus the way I do. Chris was the one with the initiative, Cyrus would respond positively, but his own interactions stayed friendly. So I got the idea that maybe he doesn't notice he's actually being flirted with. That along with the fact that he didn't generally seem to be striving towards romance, unlike my other sims, gave him the non-distinction between love and friendship.

Chris got her hesitation about spelling things out for Cyrus directly from that. I don't necessarily see her as shy - and the same goes for Cyrus, by the way - but she felt hesitant, because she wasn't really sure why Cyrus was acting the way he was. She was worried that maybe he was in fact trying to gently turn her down, but couldn't really be sure either way. So she seeked for advice, and who'd know Cyrus better than his own sister?

Cho had been observant and realized that Cyrus was a little bit different from the others, possibly before Cyrus realized it himself. It's been easy for her to accept, as she sees herself being somewhat differing from the norm as well. I also see her as tough enough for protecting her brother from high school bullies and other undesirables when necessary. She's also a romantic soul, so she'd like to see her brother have a significant other. I think it's partly via her that the rest of the Bookacies have come to accept Cyrus as he is, and hope that he finds his happiness in a way that best suits him. (As I tried to hint in the chapter, they're all following with great interest how his relationship with Chris is proceeding.)

It was also Chris who pulled Cyrus in the hot tub that night. Cyrus' timer had been at -24 for who knows how long, but it was Chris who took the initiative.

I postponed the event a little bit in the story, to put some more stress on Cyrus' character, but these are genuine pictures from their first - and so far only - woohoo.

I really like this picture, it seems to say so much to me. Chris seems to be thoroughly enjoying herself, while Cyrus seems slightly confused. Not in a bad way, he's perhaps somewhat surprised and confused, but "kind of cool I guess" describes his feelings pretty accurately.

It's kind of funny really. I mentioned to some of you that I'd like to see more of these not-so-into-woohoo types with nice points, and not long after that, I realized I actually had one of those in my hands. My take on Cyrus is that he isn't in any way opposed to woohoo, not even having some himself, it just isn't important to him. To Chris it is somewhat more important, but she is able to see things from his perspective. The same goes for romance in general. Cyrus might not strive towards it himself, but if he's led into that direction, he might happily go along.

I see this as coming from his past to some extent. And by past here, I mean Opal.

As you might remember, Cyrus used to have a best friend back in high school as well, Opal Raymond. The story of how she had a huge crush on Cyrus and he never realized it was made up afterwards, when I realized how well it fit the pattern. In reality, the two of them were just close buddies, much the same way as Cyrus and Chris started out. I might have expected Cyrus to go for his first kiss with her if nothing else, but they never were anything but friends. They haven't been as close since he went to college, so that's how that little twist came along.

I see the situation so that Cyrus later to some extent realized that Opal would have wanted to be more than friends, and that this was in the end what separated them. He didn't want the same to happen with Chris, so when she spelled out that she wanted to date him, he decided to give it a shot. He may not see there much meaning difference, but he's willing to try out something new, especially if it makes Chris happy. So far I think he's been quite happy with the experiment.

I may have needed to poke a little to get romantic shots for the chapter, but I don't think either of the two object to being poked this way.

Time will tell how things go for these two, but I'm personally optimistic about them being able to get past possible obstacles in their way. And yes, I'm of course shipping them like mad.

Phew. I think that just about covers the meta for Cyrus and Chris. Now I think it's time for me to shut up, and maybe go advance the rotation a little bit!
