Prompt: Chris trying to subtly convey her feelings for Cyrus (docnerd)
Words: 730
Universe: could be considered canon, during generation C's college years
Warnings: overdose of obliviousness
My second prompt already, yay! Had to think about this one a bit. The obliviousness is sort of hard to write, even though I tend to be the same way myself. Maybe that's why.
Chris was sitting on Cyrus' bed in the Bookacy Greek House Greek House and watching him write an assignment. She had finished hers just moments ago and was now just waiting for him so they could hang out.
He was mumbling to himself, she was leaning on the wall and worrying. After all these months, she still couldn't tell how he felt about her, despite the fact that he was her best friend. She, naturally, had come to realize that she wanted to be more than that, but she just couldn't tell about Cyrus. They were incredibly close but... She had to repress a sigh. She could have just been bold and brought it up, but... What if he'd freak out? What if it'd affect the great friendship they had? She didn't want that. Besides, the thought of saying it aloud terrified her. So what could she do? Keep trying, and hope that he'd start to notice, little by little, and hopefully not run away.
"... and therefore the factors discussed greatly affect inflation", Cyrus said aloud, pressed the final dot on its place and closed his assignment. "Okay, I'm done. Sorry you had to wait, I hope you weren't terribly bored."
"Oh it's nothing, I'm fine", Chris hurried to say. "So what do you want to do now?"
Cyrus shrugged. "I don't know", he said and got up from the floor. He dusted off his clothes, then sat down next to Chris on the bed. "We could join the others downstairs", he said, "I think they're watching a movie."
Chris wasn't sure if she felt up for that. The three romancers of the house were sure to have a date with them each, probably Charlie too, which would constantly remind her of her current dilemma, not to mention that she wouldn't want to act on her feelings in front of Cyrus' siblings and cousins. If she had to be shot down, she'd prefer to have it happen privately.
As Chris looked uncertain, Cyrus went on: "Or we could play cards or something. Wait, I think we have Scrabble here somewhere!" He sounded excited by his own idea, and went to rummage in his cupboard. Sure, Scrabble beated trying to watch the movie and ignore kissy noises, thought Chris.
A few moments later they were all set, sitting opposite to each other and examining the letters in front of them. Chris had a couple of nice word candidates, and one that made her heart skip a beat.
They started, mostly playing rather quietly, perhaps making an idle comment every now and then. After a while, Cyrus got to a difficult spot. He was staring at his letters, chewing his lip, counting squares on the board. Chris was caught up in the moment, she couldn't but stare at him in awe. He was so incredibly handsome like that, the way he was chewing his lip, probably unconsciously, the way he was leaning on his left knee, and...
"Chris?"
She startled. She noticed that Cyrus had played his turn and was waiting for her to continue, and apparently had also caught her staring at him. She blushed. "Oh, I'm sorry, I was just..." She didn't finish, she had no idea what it was that she was just. Cyrus waited.
Out of momentary insanity, or so she felt, Chris reached out a slightly shaking hand, and gently stroked Cyrus' hair. If she didn't do it now, she never would.
"What is it? Oh, do I have something in my hair?" asked Cyrus, and reached for his own hair where Chris had touched his head. Chris jumped a bit and pulled her hand away, but he didn't seem to notice, he was busy trying to find the nonexistent something in his head.
"I guess it must have fallen out", he said finally and shrugged. "Anyway, it's your turn", he pointed out.
"Oh, yeah, right", said Chris, trying to gather herself. She tried to concentrate on her letters. Ah yes, the letters. If he suspected anything, anything at all, she'd risk looking ridiculous, but she had no other words.
"Something wrong?" asked Cyrus. Maybe her look was giving something away, she worried.
"Oh, nothing, nothing", said Chris drew a long breath and spelled 'L-O-V-E'.
"Nice, you did have a word after all", said Cyrus happily. "So 'love', lemme see, that makes... fifteen points for you."
