I haven't pressed try for a baby in the main house since Fred and Chloe. At that point I was still a bit concerned about how ACR would work in regards to romance sims. Since then I've pretty much let everyone handle it for themselves.
Emma and Aldric gave me problems because they were always rolling high, and they didn't seem to concerned about having a spare. While I didn't force them to have Ferdie, I upped the risky levels and sent them on a bunch of dates so that they'd roll up woohoo wants and then I'd activate the ACR options. Eventually they rolled low enough on both checks and conceived a second time.
Romancers will generally try for the first baby rather quickly. After that they're pretty much ready to stop, though I have had romance couples that ended up with multiple 'planned' pregnancies. Delphy and Dal ended up with three due to a risky after the twins were born. If you need three in the main house you'll most likely either need to set ACR for always try or force a few tries.
