Okay, so. My last Poker face card was "1000 words or less", and I was originally a bit uninspired. You know, since those 1000 words or less could be about anything. So I went looking for inspiration, and remembered that I have plenty of unused, perfectly good prompts from the two previous Myshuno events, so why not use one of them?

This prompt is Getting married to the wrong person and it's from my 2011 Myshuno card. And actually, it's an even older weekly simspiration prompt that I included in the card because well, with the storyline I was writing back then, it obviously inspired me. I had every intention of writing that prompt then, almost two years ago, but somehow never did, as was the case with several other interesting prompts.

So what can I say, here it is now? It's another angle on a rather big event, an angle I never showed in the story itself, but kind of wanted to. This is approximately how it is in my head.

Prompt: 1000 words or less/Getting married to the wrong person
Title: I can't
Words: 755
Universe: Canon Alphabetia, early generation C
Warnings: a bit sad

It was early morning. He'd been awake for a while, but no one else in the house seemed to be yet. She had been pretty tired last night and had needed some rest because of the baby and all, so he was alone in the bedroom, alone with his thoughts.

This was it. This was their wedding day. They'd both waited for it eagerly for what seemed like ages, although in reality it hadn't been so long since he'd proposed. They were going to be married, and soon afterwards, they were going to be parents. In a few hours, she'd be his, for the rest of their lives. Like he had wanted. There was nothing he had wanted more.

He got up and started getting ready for a shower. It wouldn't be long before everyone else would be up and the fuss would start, so having one out of the shower queue was definitely reasonable. He loved her, there was no question of that. In fact, he was crazy about her. And he was sure that in her way, she loved him too. And she was going to have his baby. A little boy or girl who would need them both, love them both. He stepped in the shower and turned the tap on.

Everything was great. They were in love, and were going to have a baby. He liked his in-laws, who had been nothing but supportive and kind towards him. They clearly liked him too. And then there was her. She was kind, loving, generous, smart, not to mention gorgeous. He loved her. So why did he feel like he did?

He stepped out of the shower, started putting his clothes on. A very nice suit and tie, a bit old-fashioned perhaps. He'd quite enjoyed picking it out for the wedding. Her mother popped in to make sure he'd woken up and asked if he had eaten. He lied that he had, as he felt like he wouldn't be able to eat if he tried. That could have been shrugged off as wedding nerves, but somewhere deep in his mind he knew it wasn't that.

The forenoon was a blur. Afterwards, he couldn't really tell where the time had gone. Clearly he'd gotten dressed and combed his hair, but he had no recollection of it. He heard from her, years later, that he'd also helped with the buffet and the last decorations, but he remembered neither. It could all have been over in an instant and he wouldn't have been able to tell the difference afterwards.

There he was, in the sunny back yard, beside her, waiting for the sign to start walking. He loved her, and he believed that in her way, she loved him. What was the matter with him? Why was he feeling like his internal organs had been replaced with led?

The sign came, it was time. She quickly squeezed his hand, and they started walking. It was a sunny day, a beautiful day, and there they were, their friends and relatives, watching them. He automatically smiled as he walked, but each one of his steps felt heavier than the one before. He shouldn't have been feeling like this, but he was.

Whereas the forenoon had been over in an instant, those few minutes that it took to walk under the arch seemed to take forever. Never in his life had he had as much time to think. How he kept on walking, he no longer knew. He was all thought.

They were under the arch now, turning around to face each other, ready for the wows. All the relatives were watching, happy, smiling at them. The sun was shining at them, just like it should on a day like this.

Never in his later years could he be quite certain, but at that very moment, he felt like he had seen something in the corner of his eye. He looked again, and there was nothing. But for the shortest of times, he felt like he had seen something red in the distance.

He always wondered whether that glimpse, real or not, had had an effect. It was no conscious thought process, it was pure intuition or instinct. But at that moment, when she was saying her wows and preparing to hand the ring towards him, he knew. Knew what he felt he should have known from the beginning, earlier than the beginning. He didn't know how, but he knew.

He wasn't the man whom she should be marrying.
