I guess a question you have to ask is do you want to have a completed Alphabet Legacy under your belt, or just enjoy your Sims' characters and writing their stories, which stem from your initial idea to play an Alphabet Legacy?
My resolution (last year?) to scale back the writing in Mesa Vista, which I have done to a certain extent, has not been enough for me to foresee actually finishing the challenge for several more years, and finishing IS my main goal. But without being able to relate on a personal level to the Sims in my households, I know I would lose interest in playing them. So I think as a compromise, I will be speed playing and reporting on some of the newer households to move the challenge along and try to keep the families in whose characters I'm interested to reasonably brief slices of their lives.
You're more of a real/plotty storyteller than I am, but it seems you also enjoy the mechanics of Sims challenges, so it will be interesting to see the direction you end up taking your Alphabetia hood. And btw, good luck with the rebuild!
