Elias would like you to know...

... that I'm SUCH a computer wizard... err... withch, and I fixed it!
Well, to be precise, I went around the problem. I couldn't get Gadwin to take pictures of the game when it was in full screen mode, so I went with the windowed mode. There was one more thing that crossed my mind to try, and it worked. I couldn't change the size of the game window the usual way, by grabbing an edge and pulling, but apparently the ingame option for "screen size" actually affects the size of the window when in windowed mode. I picked the largest option, and it was only slightly smaller in width than my screen (the height was exactly right). And with Gadwin, the option I wanted was "client window", which seems to mean the content of the active window.
So now, my game works, my simmies are alive, and I can get pictures! Hooray! It might even be that my game runs slightly better in windowed mode than in full screen mode - or it might just be that the new hard drive is that much better than the old one. And I think I'm not just imagining an improvement, as I noticed I can now invite 8 sims to a party, when the old limit was 6. Not bad. :) And well, it's not a bad thing that I can now actually check what kind of pictures I got in the middle of playing, that should hopefully minimize the possibility of Gadwin accidents like the one I had recently. Of course, I can still forget to check.
The only minor downside is that the pictures I'm getting now are slightly different in proportions than the ones I used to get, due to the size of the window. So I might need to adjust my slides to that a little bit, we'll see. But, all in all, I'm pretty happy right now.
Oh, and in case you're wondering who Elias is, he's the second generation spare from my Other Legacy, the Terranos. To try my new shiny game, to see if everything works and to get used to the new style of playing in windowed mode (it'll take a while before I learn not to try to scroll with the mouse), I've been playing Terra a little bit. Elias got married to his long time girlfriend, and they're expecting. There's also a funny story about their wedding that I might share one of these days, but for now the conclusion is still not played through.
On that note, I think I gotta go. Gotta dormie to resurrect.
